• £60 'FINES FOR " GENUINE MISTAKE"

FINES totalling £40 were imposed on John T. Drury, Ltd.: Field House, Reedness, Swinefleet, hauliers, at Goole Magistrates' Court, last week, following. 20 summonses accusing them of failing to keep records for their vehicles. Five of 'their drivers were fined a total of £20 on 20 similar summonses. The company pleaded guilty to the summonses.

Mr. S. R. Dalton, prosecuting for the Ministry of Transport, said that the five drivers had made entries in their log books but had omitted the times of their journeys. Without this information the records .were not lawful.

For the company, Mr. I. V. Broomer said that it had not been realized that the records were being incorrectly kept. They had been operating since 1927, during which time the entries had been made in the same way. .There was _nothing sinister about the omissions and it had been a genuine mistake.

NEW BUS SERVICE

MIDDLESBROUGH 'MAKE PROFIT riLJRING the year ended March 31, 1.-1 Middlesbrough Transport department made a net profit of £12.000. The number of passengers _ carried, at•46,000,000. was down 500,000; receipts, at £436,658. were down £5,213 and mileage also fell by 28,434 miles to 3,509,727. Aid. W. Flynn, chairman of the transport committee, said that the good financial return was due t6 "astute management."

The fares sought were £2 5s. return and £1 10s. for children, for journeys on Saturdays and Sundays, between May 1-September 30.
