piNLY four eight-wheeled tippers were %-;/ readily available to his company for quarry work in the Yorkshire Area, Mr. J. Cresswell, sales representative, Cawood Wharton and Co., Ltd., Harrogate, told Mr. J. H. E. Randolph, Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, at Leeds last week.
Cawood Wharton were supporting an application by Mr. D. D. Speight, Moortown, Leeds, to add a 15-ton tipper to his B licence, with a condition of "road and building materials, within 150 miles."
Mr. Cresswell said that the vehicle would be mainly required for sand and gravel from the company's quarries, and for red shale. They ha"d supported Speight's original application for two B-lieensed four-wheelers.
Objection by the British Transport Commission was withdrawn at Road and Rail Negotiating Committee. . The application was granted.
"BREACH OF REGULATIONS" DECIDES SHERIFF
BUS operators Frederick and Peter Simpson, Rosehearty, were each fined 13 at Elgin Sheriff Court, last week, in a deferred decision on a case heard two weeks earlier (The Commercial Motor, June 10). The operators denied running a public service vehicle. between Forres and Elgin, as a stage or express carriage withoutsholcling a licence.
In defence it was stated that the vehicle was on a fixed-rate contract to carry dancers to the Lido Ballroom, Elgin. Witnesses gave evidence that the 2s. 6d. paid on board the vehicle to a Lido Ballroom employee gave entry to the ballroom as well as covering the cost of transport.
Advertisements appeared saying that transport was free.
Sheriff D. A. Guild ruled that the operation was in breach of the regulations.
