THIS week's debate in the House A of Commons on the railway strike strayed far beyond that sphere, and included industrial relations generally.

The Government, and the Prime Minister in particular, have far-reaching plans for the improvement of industrial relations 'writes our political correspondent]. Sir Anthony Eden has embarked on discussions with both sides of industry, and he will continue to meet them until a programme is hammered out to prevent lightning strikes.

Sir Anthony's plans, however, go even deeper. He and the Cabinet seek to remove all reasons for bad blood in industry and to get rid of the reasons for recurring wage claims that may have their basis in a feeling by the worker that he has no roots in his employment except his wage packet.

The Government believe that profit sharing may not be enough, although Mr. R. A. Butler, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has promised that the Inland Revenue will help any concern that wishes to adopt such a scheme. The Government will explore other ways of identifying the worker with his employers.

Part of this plan is the reference to the Monopolies Commission of a number of subjects and industries, including that concerned with the manufacture of batteries: EAST-WEST ROAD LINK

A7,000-MILE highway should be built linking Europe with the East, the Alliance International of Tourism, parent body of all automobile associations, have proposed to the United Nations. The secretary of the Bengal Automobile Association, who disclosed this information, stated that the countries through which the road would pass had agreed to beat the cost of its construction in their respective territories.
