Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• In the first quarter of 1970 five lorries were hijacked in London as compared with 12 in the correspondng period for 1969, although there was a small increase in the number of thefts of vehicles in the street and from private premises.

Said Mr Jack Brown (Atlas Express Ltd, London SE 16) chairman of the RHA vehicles security committee: "The statistics show how efficiently the police are coping with what has been a growing problem."

A special "Hands Off Our Freight Week" for operators and drivers is planned from August 31 to September 6, in an effort to reduce vehicle thefts still further. The campaign will include meetings and demonstrations in a number of centres and the week will culminate in a special display at the final of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition in Bramcote, near Nuneaton, on September 6.
