Midland Motor Services Ltd., has been appointed general manager of the South Wales Transport Co. Ltd. in succession to Mr. H. Weedy, who is to retire at his own request on September 30. After demobilization from the Army in 1946, with the rank of Major, Mr. Gilbert completed a three-year training course with the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd., then joined Western Welsh Omnibus Co. Ltd. as assistant area manager at Carmarthen. In 1951 he was appointed assistant manager of Thomas Bros. (Port Talbot) Ltd., becoming manager of that company in 1952. From 1954 until he took up his present appointment with East Midland in 1962 Mr. Gilbert was general manager of A. Timpson and Sons Ltd.

Two of the longest serving members of the staff of Albion Motors are to retire at the end of July. They are Mr. W. Cecil Reid, director, and Mr. Malcohn Beaton, chief designer. Mr. Reid joined the company in 1919, following service with the Royal Engineers, and after completing his apprenticeship became a member of the Albion sales staff. Following his appointment as sates manager of Albion Motors in 1947, he travelled extensively overseas. He joined the Albion board in 1950, and after the integration of the Leyland and Albion sales organization became the company's business Manager. Mr. Beaton served his apprenticeship with the company during the years 1917-1922 and later joined the engineering staff. He was appointed chief draughtsman in 1931 and chief designer in 1959, Since the Leyland-Albion merger he has been closely concerned with the rationalization of design within the group.

Mr. Sidney Chambers has been appointed works manager of Paladin Coachwork Ltd., mobile home manufacturers, of Amersham, Bucks. Mr. Chambers, 44, was previously general manager of Strachans (Coachbuilders) Ltd., now of Southampton. When Strachans moved there from Acton last year, Mr. Chambers planned and laid out their, new Southampton factory, Mr. H. P. W. Christiansen, director of plans and programming on the worldwide co-ordinator's marketing staff for Gulf Oil Corporation in Pittsburgh since 1960, has been transferred to London as sales development co-ordinator for Gulf Eastern Company's marketing department.

The Road Haulage Association licensing committee, at a meeting last week, appointed Mr. W. Bingley, of Sheffield, as a committee chairman and Mr. E. H. Patterson (E. Patterson (Blackhill) Ltd.) as vice-chairman, Mr. J. W. Bannard, national honorary treasurer of the Traders Road Transport Association, and Mr. R. E. G. Brown, secretary of the London and Home Counties division, have been elected members of the council of the Institute of Transport and will take office on October 1.

The Institute of Traffic Administration has appointed Mr. John H. S. Bangay as organizing secretary, with effect from September 1.

Mr. David D. Marshall was re-elected president of the Federation of British Rubber and Allied Manufacturers for 1964-65 at the annual general meeting of the Federation earlier this month. Re-elected vice-presidents were Mr. Eric Holt and Mr. Angus IL Reid.

Mr. C. Wills has been appointed principal executive assistant in the office of the public relations officer of London Transport. He joined L.T. in 1461.

At the annual general meeting of the Industrial Transport Association Lord Wakefield of Kendal was elected president. Vice-presidents elected were: Mr. A. L. Bagley. Mr. C. A. Elliott, Mr. .1. M. Hanna, Mr. A. A. Hart, Mr. L. J. Hopkins, Mr. F. H. Wells and Mr. W. G. Widnall. Mr. C. N. J. Graddon was elected chairman and Mr. W. G. Widnall, Mr. H. S. Douglas and Mr. A. E. Higginson vice-chairmen.

Mr. J. Harrison, managing director of A. W. Chapman Ltd., has been appointed to the board of the parent company, Constructors Ltd. Mr. Harrison was recently elected chairman of the Southern Centre of The Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers, and is also a vice-president of the Institution of Body Engineers. Mr. W. J. P. Melvin, district manager of British Road Services' Northern Scotland district, retired earlier this month. He began his transport career in 1920 with Paton's Shipping Offices Ltd. of Aberdeen. In 1929 he joined the board of Universal Transport Co. (Scotland) Ltd., and in 1934 resigned the secretaryship of Paton's in order to devote his full time to road haulage. He was a founder member in Aberdeen of the then Longdistance Road Haulage Association and was later an active member of its successor, the Road Haulage Association. During the Second World War he was a sub-district mahager in the Ministry of War Transport's fuelling scheme. When Universal Transport was nationalized in 1949, Mr. Melvin was appointed Aberdeen district traffic superintendent, and after other appointments, became district manager, Northern Scotland, in 1956.

Mr. A. F. Brocklehurst has been appointed district manager, Wanstead, South East region of Petrofina (Gt. Britain) Ltd. Mr. S. C. Nau becomes superintendent, special sales, South East region; Mr. T. E. Norman, superintendent, consumer trade, South East region; Mr. P. B. Fleming, manager, industrial sales, North East region, and Mr. I. W. Roberts, district manager, Leeds, North East region.

Mr. L. S. Mathew has been appointed chairman and governing director of Matbro Ltd., of Horley, Surrey. Mr. A. E. Darling becomes managing director, Mr. G. W. A. Chapman technical director and Mr. A. H. J. Chitty works director.

Mr. J.-J. Keane has joined the Spurling Group as Vauxhall/Bedford service manager at their Chiswick branch.

Mr. J. K. Isaac, who has been assistant traffic manager of Jamaica Omnibus Services Ltd. since 1959, is to return to this country in the autumn. Formerly with Ribble Motor Services Ltd. under the B.E.T. training scheme, Mr. Isaac joined the Aldersb_ot and District Traction Co. Ltd. in 1957 as an assistant district manager and early in 1958 became assistant traffic manager.

As announced last week, Mr. J. T. E. Robinson will be relinquishing his position as director and general manager of United Counties Omnibus Co. Ltd:, on September 1. It is now known that he will be taking up a similar position with Bristol Omnibus Co. Ltd. and associated companies.
