XPORTS of commercial vehicles in May showed an increase both in volume and value over the figures for April. The number of units, including trailers but excluding dumpers and industrial trucks, was 9,700 (8,321 in April), and the value, including dumpers and industrial trucks, was £5,502,020 (5.213,775), states the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Production, at a weekly average of 4.930 units, also showed an upward trend. The weekly average was 350 units higher than, over the first four months of the year, but total production for the first five months, at 97,546 units, was more than 5,200 below the corresponding aggregate for 1952. Of the total output for the month-19,721 units-9,42I were for export and 10,300 for the home market.

Goods vehicles, road haulage tractors and special types totalled 19.162, of which 9.822 were under 15 cwt. carrying capacit. 7,908 from 15 cwt. to 6 tons, and 1.432 over 6 tons. Production of passenger vehicles during the month reached 514 units, of which 334 were single-deck and 175 double-deck motorbuses and five were trolleybuses. Battery-electrics totalled 45.

Of the units produced during the first five months of the year, 44,100 were for export and 53,446 for the home market. Goods vehicles, road haulage tractors and special types totalled 94,12947,455 under 15 cwt., 39,471 from 15 cwt. to 6 tons, and 7,203 over 6 tons. Output of passenger vehicles was 3,202 units-2,185 single-deck and 957 double-deck motorbuses and 60 trolleybuses. Battery-electrics totalled 215 and pedestrian-controlled electrics 417.

During the first five months of the year. exports amounted to 46,099 units, valued at £28,258,688. In addition to the items given in the table below, 1,752 used commercial vehicles (£810,501) and 41,126 agricultural tractors (£16.071,959) were sent overseas. Parts and accessories shipped amounted in

value to £30.988.953.
