A CALL for larger hazard labels on vehicles carrying dangerot loads met with a sympathetic Government response.

"It is something we will look at," promised Baroness Stedman when the point was raised during a House of Lords debate on the new Highway Code.

Lord De Clifford had the impression that the labels were very small. He suggested that, with really dangerous loads, they should be perhap twice the size, so that peopli could recognise them quickly.

Lord Lucas, of ChilwOrth queried the usefulness of th( Code's reference to hazarc labels as far as the motoris' was concerned, claiming "h( has no special knowledg( about acids or petroleums."

But Lady Stedman, puttirq the Government's view, said ii was necessary for motorists t( learn all the signs and symbols Motorists were advised tt ring the police and read oui what was on the label of vehicle involved in at accident. The police an emergency services woul( carry on from there.
