Screw-thread Inserts AMETHOD of providing a screw thread in circumstances which otherwise might prove difficult, is found in the Hell-coil insert. It is in the form of a coil of diamond-shaped stainlesssteel wire.

To use such an insert, a hole is drilled of the size appropriate to the Heli-coil tap specified. After the hole has been tapped the insert is wound in by means of the inserting tool.

Heli-coil inserts are available in sizes from in. to in., rising by Yg in. up to ri in., and by j in. to in. Types of thread covered are American National coarse and fine, British Standard Whitworth ancIfine, Unified National coarse and fine, and sparking-plug threads..

Distilled Water on Tap ADEVICE which instantly converts tap water into " distilled " water is being marketed by Magnetex Ltd., Bath Road, Harlington, Middx. The process is accomplished by a filter medium contained in an unbreakable bottle.

The Water Wizard, as it is called, is sold in two sizes-8 oz. at 4s. 6d. and 16 oz. at 6s. 6d. With one initial charge, from 1 gallon to 20 gallons of distilled water can be made, depending upon the hardness of the water.

When introduced into the bottle, the filtering medium is of a golden shade. When about half the medium assumes a purple colour, the bottle must be washed out and recharged. Replacement costs 2s.

Tubeless Tyre Repairs THE repair of tubeless tyres demands a new technique, and Messrs. H.P.A,, Bowes House, Battle Road, Hailsham, Sussex, proprietors of Bowes Seat-Fast products, have introduced satisfactory methods of dealing with both large and small punctures. In the case of large punctures, what is known as a 2-D plug is used.

This plug has a two-diameter stem and it takes the place of two or three plugs each having only one diameter.

Vertical Crankshaft Grinder ANEW type of crankshaft grinder has become available in this country through Messrs. William Urquart, 1023-1027 Garratt Lane, London, S.W.17, who have become the sole concessionnaires for the De Buyser machine.

The outstanding feature of this machine is that the crankshaft is held in a vertical position for grinding, which, it is claimed, makes for easier measurement and control. .

The crankshaft is mounted on the equivalent of a lathe face plate which is driven by V-belt from an electric motor. A sliding table, which can be secured to the face plate by two bolts, enables the crankshaft to be quickly set in the correct axis of the machine. Grinding can be effected to a degree of accuracy of 0.0004 in.

Portable Fluorescent Lamps NEW portable lighting equipment including fluorescent lamps has been developed by Thorn Electrical Industries. Ltd., 105-109 Judd Street, London, W.C.1. The lamps are 2 ft. long and are contained in Perspex cylinders. It is claimed that, compared with tungsten lamps, the equipment is less glaring and not prone to damage. . The outfit is designed for operation on 110 v. 50-cycle supply.

Heavy-duty Connectors ARANGE of heavy-duty plugs and sockets for joining electric cables for battery charging, operating electric power tools, running compressors and so on, has been introduced by The Plessey Co., Ltd., Ilford, Essex.

The standard contact combinations are, two-way, 10 amp.; four-way, 50 amp., and three-way and an earthreturn, 50 amp. These plugs and sockets are of great strength and will withstand rough usage without damage.
