Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Scottish Licensing Authority has I granted permission to Glasgow Transport Department to introduce a id. fare for old-age pensioners on motorbus services...withirt the city. It is expected to come into effect early next year.

The concession, which will cover any journey. will be operative between 10 a.m. and noon and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday. This brings motorbus services in line with the other forms of public transport in the city. Objections to the application were . lodged by Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., Western S. 141.T. Co., Ltd., Central S.M.T. Co., and W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd.

MI1. 13. T. Loudon, for the objectors, said that Cllr. R. McAllister, convener of the corporation transpOrt committee, had made" the rather amazing statement" that he did not think the Id. fare would attract traffic from the objectors, but if people could travel for ld. instead of 6d., that was hound to lead to some abstraction. '

The bus companies had every sympathy with old-age pensioners, and with others in the lower income group, but it was not their function to subsidize one section of the community at the expense of another.

Mr. W. Quin, the Authority, said that in granting the application, he proposed to review the position as soon as practicable after May 31, when the financial statistics of the year's working by the department became available.

If at any time in the interval the corporation should have second thoughts on the matter, and ask him to review it, he would be quite willing to do so.
