SILENTBLOC SHARE ISSUE TREASURY permission has been 1. obtained by Silentbloc, Ltd., for the issue of 1.1m ordinary shares of 2s. each as fully paid bonus shares to members, in the ratio of one new share for each two held on September 6. This procedure will capitalize £110,000 of the share premium account.

"CONTRACT" ROYAL TIGERS TWO new Leyland Royal Tiger coaches with Duple Ambassador bodies—part of a fleet—have been delivered to the Samuelson New Trans Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., for his paper on management; " Modern Transport" award: Mr. C. SCOTTISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION?

THE transfer of the British Trans.'. port Commission's functions in Scotland tit) an independent Scottish Transport Commission, responsible to the Secretary of State for Scotland, has been suggested to the Scottish Council (Development and Industry).

This proposal was .made by the Cowal area committee, which reports increases in pilferage and waste of time since transport was nationalized. It proposes an inquiry into the transport of perishable goods in the Dunoon area.

GEARBOX FOR 34-4-TONNERS A LT HOUG H briefly mentioned in fl" The Commercial Motor" on September 15, 1950, the Model 437 gearbox is a relative newcomer to the David Brown range. Weighing around 120 lb., including bell-housing and control unit, this design has been prepared for vehicles with a total laden weight of up to 51 tons or a capacity of 31-4 tols, the maximum engine torque being 1,600

lb.-ins. •

Direct drive is used for top gear, whilst standard ratios are 1.78 : 1 for third, 3.17.: 1 for second, 9.72 : 1 for

BRUSSELS SHOW DATES

THE Brussels Show is to be held in the Palais du Centenaire from January 19-30 next. Applications for space have to be submitted to the Salon de l'Autornobile et du Cycle, Rue du Luxembourg 21, Brussels, by September 30.

A.M.D.E.T. TENDERS ARLIER this year, A.M.D.E.T.,

Montevideo, called for tenders for the supply of 250 trolleybuses and ancillary equipment. The closing date for submission of tenders was given as July 30, but this has now been postponed to September 10.

UNDER Board of Trade order S.I. 1951, No. 1476, operative as from August 20, rubber tyres and tubes of 7 ins. or greater cross-section require licences for export to countries previously free from control.

COUNCIL TO OPPOSE CROSVILLE

BEC AUSE it considers that 'unfair treatment is being meted out, Llangollen Urban District Council is to object to the application by Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., to renew its road service licences for the Llangollen, Chester and Corwen routes. The council is to ask that a variation be made so that weekly return tickets and day return facilities be made available, as they are on other Crosville routes.

DUNDEE STAFF PROBLEMS

SINCE height-and age limits for platform staff were relaxed during last July, 38 applicants have been accepted by Dundee Transport Department, but 48 men have left, leaving the undertaking 73 below strength. The convener of the Transport committee has said that conductresses may have to be employed.

In the 81 days ended August 4, the undertaking carried 300,000 fewer passengers than in the comparable period last year and .£14,108 was -lost,

time at horsed-coach driving when he entered the business.

As elsewhere, rapid development of inexpensive touring facilities by bus or coach took place during the inter-war period, with the result that new waves of holidaymakers came to know mountains and lakes that were at one time virtually inaccessible to the casual visitor from far afield. Fortunately, such development as there has been in the district has followed enlightened lines.

There is space to spread on the mountains, and even many of those ties for visits, local, operators pn certain routes run vehicles which fall within the 15-passenger limit which has been applied.

Keswick itself has a small but modern bus station. whence Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., provides regular connections to a variety of places in the surrounding countryside. it is used also by the Ribble buses, both on stage services (the main route from the south, via Kendal and Ambleside, is worked by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.) and express services from as far afield as

Glasgow, Liverpool, Blackpool or Manchester. A service operated jointly by Ribble and the West Yprkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., brings in visitors from Leeds.

But it is, perhaps, the co-ordinated service that starts from the Market . Place and runs through Borrowdale to Seatoller which particularly seems to be Keswick's own. This is worked during the summer by Weightmans (Keswick), Ltd., Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., Messrs. R. W. Simpson, Messrs. W. L. Askew, and Messrs. T. Young and Sons. In the winter, when the headway is greatly reduced, operation is shared by the Simpson and Weightman organizations.

For most of the passengers, the Borrowdale bps is no more than a springboard which speeds them on the way to Great Gable, Scafell Pike, the Langdales or elsewhere, and on many journeys the capacious luggage
