• A truck driver whose evidence helped convict three members of a drugs gang has been forced to seek police protection after his life was threatened by other gang members. Driver Fred Perry, who is on the witness protection scheme, has had to move house twice since the case in March. He has bodyguards who are constantly informed of his whereabouts and has difficulty in getting work as he con no longer take up references, in case he can be traced. Perry has had little contact with his family.
He phoned the British Embassy in Bordeaux last year after the gang attempted to recruit him to carry cannabis resin back to the UK. Officers tracked his truck on its journey back from Spain and eventually arrested three people trying to recover the drugs. Perry, who has been a driver For 30 years, says : "I was lust an ordinary bloke until all this happened. My life has been turned upside down but at least I've come through it. Customs have looked after me."
