WHEN Stevenson Transport, Ltd., W Liverpool, applied before Sir William Hart, North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, at Liverpool, on April'15, for A licences for four Scammell tractors and three semi-trailers of 28 tons unladen weight for use on services between Liverpool, Derby and Nottingham, the company met with considerable opposition by the railways and seven other road operators.

Vehicles Worked Too Hard.

Mr. Ian Macaulay, for the applicant, said that the company had at present vehicles of a total unladen weight of approximately 174 tons, of which 144 tons was claimed and the other 30 tons discretionary. The company.conducted a trunk service between these places, as well as providing local facilities at Liverpool, Derby and Leicester. During the basic year, the tonnage carried per ton of unladen weight was 309, and, during the year ended March 31, 1936, 377. Those statistics would seem to show overworking of the vehicles, requiring great efforts on the part of the repair staff. If the present application were granted, the tonnage carried per ton of unladen' weight would be 324.
