• The Northern group of bus companieshas received permission to operate an emergency service, via the Tyne Tunnel, between North and South Shields in the event of a breakdown in the cross-river ferry between the two towns.
The bus joumey will cover about seven miles and passengers will pay the normal ferry charge of 6d, but the bus company will be re-imbursed the full cost of the service by the Tyne Port Authority which operates the ferry. It is expected that the emergency service will operate for a week at the end of October when the ferry is withdrawn for overhaul.
