WE much regret to learn of the death, VY on September 18, of SIR WILLIAM J. THOMSON, D.L., LL.D., chairman and managing director of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd. Rom in 1881, he was trained, as an engineer in Glasgow, and was Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 032-1935. He was knighted in 1934. He had been ill for a considerable period. With a few associates, Sir William started the S.M.T. organization in 1905. In the process of its growth, it acquired' a number of other road passenger transport undertakings and until the S.M.T. group was taken over by the British Transport Commission last April, Sir William controlled a large part of Scotland's coach and bus services.

21 YEARS OF ENDEAVOUR THE 21st anniversary luncheon of

Cox and Co. -(Watford), Ltd., and Cox and Co. (R.W.). Ltd., held at Watford Town Hall on September 17,was a most cheery function, which concluded for some of the guests with a visit to the Watford works. The first company mentioned employed 50 people in as first year and now has 750, whilst sales have appropriately increased to 21 times those of the ,first year. Starting with the manufacture of hoods and side screens, its main business now concerns unitconstruction seats made of tube and sections. ' Mr,' R. W. Cox, chairman, presented gold watches to 11 members of the company. He also referred to the valuable assistance given to him by Mr. Wilton and Mr. Toon. The otherconcern started in a small shop in Camden Town which was purchased from the Lucas concern by Mr. R. W. Cox. The main business is now electrical service and _,Supply, particularly as a Lucas distributor. ' The company has depots in many parts in and near London, and one as far away as Bournemouth, under the general management a Mr. S. F. Ward.
