Hercules Six-cy lindered Engine in Interesting New 5-tonner, the Chassis Price of Which, with Ii-ft. 3-in.

Wheelbase, is S800

HITHERTO marketing only petrolengined machines, Farmer-Federal Motors, Ltd., 2,50-268, Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, 11, sole concessionnaire in this country for Federal vehicles, announces the introduction of an oil-engined chassis. The model we inspected was a 5-tonner, to the general specification of which the 4-tonner, which is also available, conforms, the essential differences between the two machines being in the road

springs, axle ratio a n d certain other details.

A Hercules model DJXB six-cylindered unit is installed, and rated at 29.4 h.p.; its output at 2,600 r.p.m. is 76 b.h.p. The maximum torque of 178 Ib.-ft. is developed at 1,400 r.p.m. Cylinder dimensions of 3i

ins, by 4i ins, give a piston displacement of 4.26 litres.

A drop forging, in alloy steel, is used for the crankshaft, which is supported in seven 3-in.-diameter bearings, the total projected area of which is 30.6 sq. ins. The drop-forged steel connecting rods have a lower-end bearing of 2i ins, diameter and, in order to provide for the withdrawal of the rods through the cylinder bores, the ends are split at an angle. Each flat-topped, alloy piston is fitted with six rings, four compression and one of the oil-regulating type being arranged above the gudgeon-pin, and a second oil ring around the skirt.

The cylinder block and crankcase form a one-piece casting, the beds for the main bearings being integral with the crankcase.

Hercules combustion-chamber design incorporates the rotary-swirl principle and, as opposed to the more usual practice, the chamber is housed within the block casting. Bosch injection equipment is used, the drive to the fuel pump being by chain from the camshaft, an eccentrically mounted third and intermediate sprocket providing for correct chain tension.

Pintle-nozzle-type injectors are used and there is, of course, a transfer pump for delivering the fuel from the tank to the injection pomp, suitable strainers being arranged in the circuit. Of 22 gallons capacity, the fuel tank is secured to the near-side chassis member on a V-shaped cradle platform.

The valves are arranged vertically in the one-piece cylinder head, and are operated from the four-bearing camshaft, which is located in the crankcase and driven by helical gears, by conventional-type tappets and tubular push-rods.

Full forced-feed lubrication is adopted, the gear-type oil pump employed being located in the sump and gear driven from the camshaft.

A gear-driven centrifugal pump is used in the water-circulating system, cooling being further assisted by a four-bladed fan, which component. together with a Bendix booster for brake operation, is driven from the crankshaft by duplicated belts, arranged for triangulated drive. Another belt-driven component is a 12volt dynamo Which is mounted on a cradle platform attached to the cylinder head on the near side. To the rear of the dynamo is a large air cleaner of the oil-bath type. An 11-in.-diameter Borg and Beck single dry-plate clutch takes the drive to a four-speed sliding-pinion gearbox, on the off side of which the usual provision is made for a power take-off. The two-piece, open propeller shaft has Hardy Spicer needle-roller joints, the self-ajigning centre bearing being mounted in a rubber housing.

The banjo-type rear axle has fully floating axle shafts, and has bevel gears giving a ratio of 6.8 to 1. Cast-steel, spoked wheels, with demountable rims, are fitted, the size of the tyres being 34 by 7, with twins at the rear.

Semi-elliptic springs are adopted, those at the rear having a fixed front eye and slidably mounted rear ends. All spring eyes are rubber bushed and helper springs, in the form of auxiliary leaves, superimposed above the main springs, form standard equipment.

Pedal operation controls Lockheed hydraulic brakes on all four wheels, whilst the hand lever serves mechanically to operate rear-wheel shoes only. The brake drums are 16 ins. in diameter, those at the front being 21 ins, wide and those at the rear 31 ins. wide.

As a 5-tonner with an 11-ft. 3-in, wheelbase, the chassis price is £E00; with a 13-ft. 11-in. wheelbase £820, and with a 16-ft. 2-in. wheelbase £840. As a 4-tonner the respective prices are £730, £750 and £770.
