Production figuresBoard of Trade Index Although Reduced ProlE of Industrial Production

are Still shows that, during the June quarter of 1938, there was a substantial decline. Nevertheless, we are in a much better position than was the case during the corresponding period of 1930, which was just a year after the beginning of the great depression, the production figure being 22,1 per cent. over the index figure for that year.

"Know Your LightTHUNDERSTORMS have fling' is the R.A.C.'s I claimed a few victims recently, as well as considerable space in our daily news

papers. Topically enough, the R.A.C. send us a letter containing the information that the Club has received numerous inquiries from its members as to what are common-sense safeguards in time of "nature's wars." The Club is of the opinion that closed vehicles are reasonably free from possibility of danger, due to electric discharges, during thunderstorms. It is, however, suggested that high speeds are not advisable in such circumstances, because any considerable tract of rarffied air, in the rear of a fast-moving vehicle, tends to attract electric discharges. Also, windows on the side of the vehicle from which the wind is blowing, should be closed, as lightning has a way of following draughts. Should it be desired to seek shelter with a vehicle, in a thunderstorm, trees with smooth bark should be chosen as " umbrellas " for the occasion. Conifers, such as the oak and elm, should be avoided.

Why the Left Arm xiiE were rather interested to

for Signalling " observe that on some of the Buses new request-stop posts erected by London Transport, some of which are made of concrete, there are notices to the effect that intending passengers should halt buses by extending their left arms. We presume that this is to avoid any risk of giving has drivers the impression that they are receiving foreign salutes. Incidentally, it is usually the left hand which is employed by women for carrying small parcels, whilst they often tuck their handbags under their left arms. May a Driver Ever WHAT should a driver do if Proceed Against the Vv a light signal ceases to Red ? function properly and remains red? This occurred a few days ago on a road on which we were driving. After waiting a few minutes with a stream of traffic piling up behind, we surveyed the cross traffic and proceeded warily when the road was clear. Presumably we all ought to have waited for a policeman, but none could be seen. Perhaps the signal was in the wrong in acting as a traffic obstruction.

Will the Sleeve I T is interesting to speculate Valve Return to whether or not the sleeve Popularity ? . . . valve will return to popularity

in connection with engines of commercial vehicles. Curiously enough, this type of valve is now being adopted for the latest Bristol aircraft engines, and is being used for long-range flyingboats belonging to Imperial Airways. According to this company, the advantages of sleeve valves are

many. They eliminate valve maintenance, reduce the number of parts, effect a big reduction in fuel consumption and lessen mechanical and exhaust noises. If all these points could be attained in ordinary engines of this type, it is surprising that they have not made further headway in the commercial-vehicle field.

A N interesting development in the attempt to solve the dazzle problem is the matching up of two lamps with slightly differing optical characteristics, one giving a beam of exceptional width at a reasonable distance, the other a long centre beam of great strength with a subsidiary beam of more than normal breadth, each, of course, having vertical cut-off to prevent dazzle. In connection with this arrangement, which is by Trippe, the maker can provide an intensity control switch giving any required degree of illumination for travelling in Log, etc,.
