Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Cross-border enforcement must not compromise UK

NEW TRANSPORT secretary Geoff Hoon (right) has told the European Commission that a directive covering cross-border enforcement of road safety laws must not mean the UK surrenders its data protection rules,

Hoon attended the first Transport Council of the French presidency in Luxembourg on 9 October to debate the implications of cross-border enforcement of safety laws covering seat-belt wearing, speeding and jumping red lights.

No firm agreement has been reached; the UK and a number of other states have stressed that although the sharing of data regarding drivers that flout the rules is important, they do not want to concede competence to the Commission.

Chris Welsh, The Freight Transport Association's general manager, campaigns, says the issue is at a very early stage and may be returned to in December when the council next meets.
