British Sugar's Bury St Edmunds factor (the firm's second largest) can process 12.000 tonnes of beet a day. Typically. 1.400 tonnes of crystal sugar are produced a day.
CMvisits some interesting spots but it's not every day that we are given a guided tour of a sugar factory. Robin Limb, British Sugar agricultural business manager. says that the Bury St Edmunds plant has its own boiler house which produces 14.5 megawatts of electricity for the site. A further 50MW are sold for use in the national supply network.The place is a mass of chimneys, silos, steam and sheds — and bulker trailers.
Charlie Stennett of Stennet Transport gives some idea o the commitment they make to these huge factories: "WE pick the beet up from local farms and deliver it to Britisl -1 Sugars Bury St Edmunds and Cantley factories.
-Over the Christmas perioc we can bring in 42 sugar beet loads a day to Bury. he adds, but usually its 22 loads."
