• Road tax dodgers are being targeted in a nationwide clampdown by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. After 31 January 1998 hauliers will have to notify the DVLA whenever they intend to keep vehicles off the road untaxed—there will no longer be a "do nothing" option. JRoad tax cheats in the North-West risk having their vehicles wheelclamped and impounded. From this week clamping teams will be patrolling streets in Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire on the look-out for unlicensed vehicles.
