Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Brian Weatherle% • As forecast by CM, ERF is to market the 12.7-litre Detroit Diesel 60 Series engine in its EC heavy truck range alongside Cummins and Perkins diesels. EC models fitted with the Detroit will be badged EC127.

The Sandbach-based truck maker will offer the four-stroke 60 Series in three power ratings from 370-500hp (see box). The electronically controlled six comes with the Pro Driver in-cab information system, and operators can use the Pro Manager option to collect fleet management information.

The 60 Series will be supported by the ERF dealer network and is compatible with ERF's own EDIS diagnostic system.

For the past nine months ERF has been evaluating the 60 Series in haulage fleets run by its dealers. The general response in terms of fuel consumption and driveability is said to be "very favourable".

Operators are increasingly speccing 12-litre-plus engines for general haulage, but the 60 Series will undoubtedly put Perkins under increasing pressure as an engine supplier to ERF.

The mechanically fuelled 12-litre Tx has a small but strong following among operators reluctant to embrace electronics, but it is unlikely to make Euro-3 in its current form.

However, the 60 Series was designed for electronic operation from the outset and should be able to meet forthcoming tougher emission standards without major modification.

ERF has made a number of other changes to the EC range. Eaton's S-Series gearbox is now its first choice heavy truck synchromesh transmission, ousting ZF's heavier Ecosplit box.

The S-Series is said to give weight savings of up to 70kg compared with synchro boxes from the likes of Scania and Volvo, but the Ecosplit will still be on the options list.

Depending on operator requirements the S-Series will be offered as an eight, 12 or 16-speed unit; the 12speed Eaton Twin Splitter is also available as a no. cost alternative.

Other revisions include a new Isringhausen driver's seat with improved trim, better support and optional seatbelts. Goodyear Energy tyres will be a line fitment on all 4x2 and 6x2 EC tractive units.
