• Cumbrian haulier Vivian Shandwick Lightfoot & Partners has appeared before Wigton magistrates charged with a series of maintenance and tachograph offences following a crash in which two people died.

Vivian Shandwick Lightfoot„knn Elizabeth Lightfoot and Stephen Vivian Lightfoot of Silloth are accused of allowing driver Robert Lightfoot to use a Leyland Daf vehicle on which the brakes and speed limiter were poorly maintained.

The charges arise from an accident on the A596 at Thursby on .1 January in which John McEuan and his daughter Nicola, from Workington, both died.

The three Lightfoot family members are also charged with using a lorry which had a wire attached to the tachograph to prevent it recording. The hearing has been adjourned.

Robert Lightfoot faces two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and will appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 1 December to enter a plea.

Five further charges against Robert Lightfoot, including driving a goods vehicle with defective brakes, driving without due care and attention and tachograph offences, have also been adjourned.
