The Hawk's bookish pursuits led to the old bird being rewarded twice over this week, when he got his mitts on the latest issues of Historical Commercial News and Steaming, The November issue of HCN, the journal of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society, includes all the latest news, plus reports of meetings and rallies.

The text is illustrated throughout with superb photos. Hot off the press this month is the announcement that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will open Basingstoke's Milestones Museum on 1 December. Archive photographs from 1966 show Sneller Transport of Dover, Kent, deploying its fleet of Bedford TKs taking chalk from Danes Tip to the Eastern Docks for in-fill. The love affair with Maltese buses continues as Paul Chapman goes to Malta to drool over the perfectly pre• served Dodges and Bedfords bedecked in orange and sunshine yellow liveries.

The autumn 2000 edition of Steaming, from the National Traction Engine Trust, con tains news, features, reports and photos to brighten up any winter day. Some rallies this year were a total wash-out due to rain and flooding, but members coped hero ically. Luckily there were events where the sun did shine. Highlights included a recreation of the leg endary race between Arthur Napper's Marshall Old Timer and Miles Chetwynd-Stapylton's Aveling & Porter Ladygrove.
