Preliminary Arrangements.

The eleventh annual inspection of commercial motor vehicles, organized by the Commercial Motor Users Association (Incorporated) with the object of encouraging drivers, by means of mc.ney prizes and other awards, to take a personal interest in the driving and condition of their vehicles, and to run them without accident, will take place in London during the month of May, 1917; but the usual assembly, or Parade, of vehicles will not be held owing to the difficulty of sparing vehicles from service during the present period of stress.

The organization of these annual inspections, which are supported by the Royal Automobile Club and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, is in the hands of a special committee. The prize fund is subscribed by users, and by manufacturers and suppliers of vehicles, tires, bodies, fuels and accessories. Prizes will be awarded to drivers for results obtained in written and in oral examinations, coupled with inspection of their vehicles under running conditions. In this way it is hoped`to carry on the educational work among drivers: which has been one of the aims of the Association since its foundation.

A new and advanced examination will be held, for which only the winners of 1st and 2nd prizes, and those who have gained not less than 85 per cent, of marks in previous examinations, are eligible.

Entries.

All members of the may enter any number of their drivers free, and non-members upon payment of a fee of 10s. for each driver entered. Entries may be made forthwith on forms which can be had on application to the Secretary of the Association, Mr. F. G. Bristow, 83, Pall Mall, London, S.W., and they should be received not later than the 15th January, 1917. They may be for :— Class I.

(a) Written and practical examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.

(5) Written and practical examination for drivers of petrol vehicles.

l?rivers who have obtained 1st or 2nd prizes, or who have obtained not less than 85 per cent, of marks in previous examinations, may enter for either or both of the above examinations. Any prize-winner of previous years can be informed on application to the Secretary, whether he is eligible to sit in this class.

Class IL (e) Oral examination for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.

(d) Written examination" for drivers of steam vehicles and tractors.

(e) Oral examination for drivers of petrol vehicles.

(I) Written examination for drivecs of petrol vehicles. () Oral examination for drivers of electric vehicles. (h) Written examination for drivers of electric vehicles.

Drivers may enter for all three subjects—steam, petrol,, and electric, in either oral or written • but no driver may enter for examinations (c) and (4, (e) and (1‘), or (0-and (h).

Examinations.

Class „1.—The examinations in Class I will be divided into two Darts, in both of which a candidate inust pass in order te win a prize or certificate. The first part will consist of more advanced questions than those asked in Class II examinations, and the second part will consist of practical work such as will

satisfy the examiners that the knowledge gained in the lectures has been properly understood by the candidate, and that he can apply such knowledge in practice. Full particulars of Class. I examinations will be forwarded to eligible drivers upon written application.

Class II.—These examinations will be based on the information contained in the lectures delivered by the Inspecting Engineer during 1915, which have been published in book form under the title of "The Commercial Motor Drivers' Handbook." Copies may be obtained from the Secretary of the C.M.U.A.: 83, Pall Mall, S.W.' is. 9d. each, post free. All drivers are at liberty. to write and ask questions arising from the lectures. The oral examinations will be spread over several evenings, and the written examinations will be held on separate evenings, all in-London, Markings.

The Inspecting Engineer will arrange to visit each garage befare the BEarnination, and his reports on those visits, together with the marks obtained by each driver in the examinations, will be recorded by the committee, and awards based thereon. Each driver obtaining more than a fixed percentage of marks will receive a money prize, a badge, or a certificate.

Prizes.

The following cash prizes will be awarded by the Inspection Committee of the Association :— (I.) C.M.U.A. Class I Championship Prizes. Written and Practical Examination.

Steam : 1st prize, £10; 2nd prize, ,25. Petrol : 1st prize £10; 2nd prize, 25. Electric : It is hoped there will be an electric section in 1918.

Winners of these prizes will also receive a special medal, or badge and certificate, and each driver who gains more than 75 percent. of marks will also receive a certificate.

(II.) C.M.U.A. Class II Prizes. Written Examination.

Steam : 1st prize, £5; 2nd prize, £3; 3rd prize, £2; ten prizes 21. Petrol : 1st prize, £5; 2nd prize, £3; 3rd prize, £2; ten prizes 21. Electric (provided by the Electric Vehicle Committee of the Incorporated Municipal Electrical Association): 1st prize, £5; 2nd prize, £3; 3rd prize 22.

The winners of 1st, prize, and 3rd prizes will each reeeive a special badge and certificate, whilst 21 prize-winners and each driver who gains more than a certain percentage of marks will also receive a certificate. Winners of 1st prizes in the 1913, 1914, 1915, or 1916 examinations are not eligible to compete in this Class.

(III.) C.M.U.A. Class II Prizes. , Oral Examination.

These prizes, which will -amount to about 250 in total value, sub-divided into cash prizes of 12, 21, and 10s., will be awarded at the discretion of the Inspection Committee to drivers of vehicles, based on the number of marks awarded. Drivers who do well in this examination will also receive certificates.
