THE use of rivets instead of welding on the turntables of articulated vehicles was advocated by the Northern Area vehicle inspector, Mr.. J. R. Atkinson, in a case at Thornaby-on-Tees Magistrates' Court, on Tuesday. H. L. Walker, Ltd., hauliers, Robert Street Garage, Thornaby, were accused of using a lorry in a dangerous condition on the Yarm-Thirsk . road. They pleaded not guilty and the case was dismissed.
For the prosecution, insp. H. W. Severs said the semi-trailer pulled away from the tractor, with the result that the vehicle's load of timber turned over.
Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, defending, said in normal circumstances a welded turntable was strong enough, but in this instance the driver took a bend too fast in order to -get up a bank on the other side.
The company secretary-, Mr. A. Darley, pointed out that the vehicle was bought from British Road Services and had travelled 110,000 miles without any sign of weakness in the turntable. It would have meant completely dismantling it and burning off welding to find holes for rivets.

MR. F. J. SPEIGHT was on Monday elected chairman of the national council of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association. He is director and secretary of the Ewer group.
Mr. W. Dodds, Scottish Area chairman, was elected a new vice-chairman. Three other vice-chairmen—Mr. H: • W. B. Richards (Whitchurch), Mr. T. Hoyle. (Halifax) and Mr. A. Bolton (Blackburn) —were re-elected. Mr. F. Broomfield (Chilwell) was elected honorary treasurer to succeed Mr. S. D. Oddy, who resigned because of ill health.
Mr. John M. Birch remains chairman of the national executive and finance co mm i ttee.

A71 application by H. Nixon, Brierton Lane, West Hartlepool, for a new B licence to carry building materials was refused. Mr. Nixon said he did considerable work on local building sites three yearsago, before surrendering his licence.
