A £170,000 DEPOT for containers and unit load trailers to be dealt with speedily by Customs is to be provided by The British Transport Docks Board at Southampton and will be in operation later this year.
It will accommodate about 170 containers, without stacking, or trailers and space exists for future extension from its 2+ acres to 20. It will operate on a common-user basis. The number of containers and trailers passing through Southampton rose from 15,671 in 1965 to over 22,000 last year and is expected to reach 66,000 in 1968.
