Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

As previously announced, North Italy will see commercial motor trials on a large scale, in the latter half of September. These trials will be held in connection with the opening of the new bridge over the River Po, and they are to be held with the co-operation, and the financial assistance, of the various Governmental departments; successful vehicles may he purchased by the Government. The Ring, of Italy is expected to give his patronage to the whole of the arrangements. Representatives of the executive committee-by which are meant those in charge of the organisation of festivities, exhibitions, and other events incidental to the dedication of the bridge in question— the 'Italian Touring Club, the Italian Motor Club, and the War Office, will shortly meet to draw up the technical part of the programme. The following is a provisional scheme of competition, published by the Ministry of Agriculture, 'industry and Trade. It is proposed to divide the commercial vehicles into eight classes, as follow :—

Class I.—Vehicles for a useful load of 50-zoo Class H.—Vehicles for a useful load of ono-000 Class 1I1.-Vehicles for a useful load of goo-n,500 kilos.

Class TV.--Vehicles for a useful load of ,soo-2,000 kilos.

Class V.—Vehicles for a useful load of 2,ono-3,ono Class VT.—Vehicles for a useful load of over 3,000 kilo.

Class. VIL—Omnibuses fer 6-8 passengers.

Class I/HT.—Omnibuses for more ilem _no passengers. Regulations.

1. In consideration of the great services which petrol-propelled automobiles can render, as substitutes for draught-animals, in many agricultural and commercial undertakings, the Ministry of Agriculture, with a view to determining the value of these machines, has decided to organise an international contest, and entrusts the committee with the carrying out of the sarne.

2. The competition takes place it Piacenza in the month of September, fgo8.

3. To this competition machines of the three undermentioned categories will be admitted :--(a) automobiles with petrol motors for carrying, and for trailing loads; (b) automobiles with petrol motors for propelling ploughing and reaping machines; and (c) automobiles with petrol motors for working stationary and field machines.

4. Awards as under ;—Categories A, B and C.--lst prize, diploma of honour and 1,000 francs. Categories A, B and C.-2nd prize, gold medal and 5oo francs. The Ministry of Agriculture will purchase one of the first-prize vehicles, such vehicle to be nominated by the jury.

5. Entries for the competition must reach the head-quarters of the corn

mittee, the Chamber of Commerce at Piacenza, on or before 15th August, 1.908. Amongst the particulars accompanying entry, the price of the machine, its weight, dimensions, purpose and efficiency are indispensable.

6. The machines themselves must be forwarded to the above address not later than loth September.

7. Inventors, manufacturers, and agents (Italians or foreigners) may participate in the competition. Where a prize is awarded, it goes to the inventor or manufacturer, and not to the agent.

8. A jury, nominated by the Ministry of Agriculture, will decide as to quali ties of machines, and will make the awards. There can be no appeal against its decisions.

9. Machines are to undergo all trials which may be considered necessary by the jury. Manufacturers, or legal re presentatives, who decline to submit their machines to these tests, will be excluded from the competition and re garded as not having entered. The purpose of these tests is to determine

the quality of the machines—in regard to simplicity and ease of management— as well as the consumption of fuel, their working efficiency, and their practical value.

12. The Ministry of Agriculture bears the expenses connected with costs of prizes and tests.
