A Huge Chassis of the Rigid-frame Type, with 80 h.p. Engine, at the Berlin Show.
TWO OR three weeks ago we drew attention to the tact that Germany had commenced the construction of si±wheeled motor vehicles of the rigid
frame type. We are now able to publish an illustration of a saloon bus built on this principle by Bussing. r.lhis bus presents many interesting
features, and in general appearance closely resembles certain American prodin:Is, such as that built by Geridyears, but the design actually differs considerably from the Goodyear in that there is a separate propeller shaft drive, through torque tubes, to axles of. practically the cotiventional type, each provided with a differential and bevel. driven, the axle casing being split on the horizontal plane and provided with itruinpet tubes which are bolted to the central casing.
These two axles are mounted at the ends of inverted halfzelliptic springs joined by a crossbar and secured at their centres to ordinary half-elliptic springs shackled to the frame side-members in the .usual manner, thus providing what may he termed a semi-bogie construction.
The chassis appears to he built especially for bus work, although there is no doubt that it could be utilized in ether directions if necessary, but the complete bus, which we illustrate, is provded with special drop-frame eaten
alone to carry the bus platform and to give a low step; also triangulated -extensions jut out from the sides of the frame at various points along its length, in order to provide a better foundation for the body.
Chassis and complete vehicles of Bussing make are being advertised for
sale in the German papers, showing that the progress made has been consi4er.7 able. Therefore, the vehicles must not be looked upon as purely experimental.
The rigid-frame six-wheeler exhibited at the Berlin Motor Show is ,a remarkable chassis, with a six-cylinderecl power unit of 80 b.p. and huge tyres.
