Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

— but now the ETA's here to help. Dave Young reports on its latest guide.

Van men and women, those most maligned of road users, have been given a helping hand with the recent publication of the London Van Guide. Published with support from Transport for London's Freight Unit, the Freight Transport Association and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the guide provides large-scale maps and detailed information about parking restrictions, penalty charge notice (PCN) hotspots and other essential information for surviving on the capital's streets.

Rules and regulations

Different parts of the City have different rules and regulations so the guide's customised street plans provide information for specific addresses at a glance, helping drivers to find the nearest free loading or unloading bays. The large-scale maps are colour-coded to make them easy to read.

As well as helping drivers make deliveries another objective of the guide is to try to reduce the colossal number of penalty charge notices and parking tickets levied on long-suffering commercial operators.

It even reveals where to get a breakfast for under a liver.

John Lewis has already decided to give its home delivery drivers copies of the London Van Guide and following that endorsement Commercial Motor decided to put the new tome to the test with North Londoner Terry Hall who's been driving commercial vehicles in the capital for 30 years. After a week Terry reported enthusiastically: "It's good. The maps are excellent... very comprehensive. They show the loading and parking restrictions, especially in this area." (His current beat is around Oxford Street.) "It saves a hell of a lot of aggravation by showing restrictions on loading and unloading," he adds. -They've even got a postcode map. The maps show the CPZs, how to deal with them and exactly how much to pay in each one. "This is a decent book with loads of information. I know a couple of lads at the depot who want one already but this copy is staying safely in my cab!

The guide costs £9.99 and is available from Shopfta at www.shoplta. co.uk(08717111111)or www.thepieguide.com (08704445435). •
