CONTAINER TRAFFIC through the Port of Felixstowe in 1982 rose to a new record of 427,780 boxes, 19 per cent up on the previous year's total of 348,930.

Over the last three years container traffic has almost doubled, following the opening of the new Dooley and Walton container terminals which had their first full year of operation in 1982.

Dooley terminal handled 86,582 containers, while Walton terminal handled 119,197 containers.

Overall tonnage through the port increased by over 1m tonnes to 7.68m from the 1981 figure of 6.54m. Ro-ro traffic rose to 2.55m tonnes from the 1981 figure of 2.52.
