How Unnecessary Competition Has Been Overcome and Better Services Provided by the Pooling of Interests.

TEE REPORT of operations of the associated organizations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (German State Railways) and the Kraftverkehr Deutschland Gesellschaft (German Motor Car Service) indicates a progressive development in transporta

tion in Germany. In March, 1924, these undertakings pooled their interests in order to eliminate unnecessary competition and to provide better and more profitable service. In the contract signed by both companies the activities of the motor service are fixed as fellow: Transportation of parcels in the intensified local areas, short-distance hauls, general delivery service and special tasks. Inasmuch as the railways were anxious to free themselves of the carriage of goods which could be more profitably conveyed by motor vehicles and as the most important field of activity of the motor service is to be found in the centres of traffic in the large towns, the association devoted its attention to the development of such services in Berlin. :Similar steps were also undertaken in Hamburg, Hildesheim, Braunschweig, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Breslau, Stettin and Hanover, while preparatory work of this kind is also under way in Magdeburg and Bremen.

The report of traffic handled by the combined associations during the nine Months ended December last shows that in the Berlin express goods service 57,856 tons were dealt with, producing a revenue of £366,092. Of this amount the motor company received 90 per cent. and the remainder was retained by the railway authorities.

A further important task of the motor company is the establishment of short-distance services in districts where no railway facilities exist. The following services have already been opened : (1) Gleiwitz-Kieferstaedl, for passenger, post and parcels service ; (2) Neustadt-Steinau-Ziegenhals, for passenger and parcels service.

These two services during the period from June to December, 1924, carried 19,722 passengers and 65 tons of goods with total receiptd of £7,618, of which

10 per cent went to the railway company. A large nutnber of similar services is being planned. .

The loss of time in the transport of goods by rail between large towns has of late been the subject of much adverse conuneat in Germany and has resulted in increased use of motor transportation. in order to regain business of this character it is proposed to introduce a combined railway and motor service which would make possible the transport of goods from Berlin to Hamburg, a distance of about 220 miles, within, 24 hours, including collection anti delivery.

The administration of the combined rail and motor service has also entered into negotiation with the association of narrow-gauge and private railways and with the association of German tramways, to eliminate unnecessary competition and thereby effect profitable coinbinations.
