• The FTA has announced details of its programme of educational courses for the 1971/72 season.

A one-week residential course, "Management in transport and distribution", is to be held from November 28 to December 3. It is designed to bring established transport managers up to date with management thinking and expertise as applied to distribution and transport. The programme will cover such subjects as management by objectives, industrial relations, finance, management of systems and the total concept of physical distribution.

"Cost control — its role in effective transport management" is the title for a series of regional one-day seminars on costing and budgeting: "Choosing the right transport medium", "Control of the company car fleet", "VAT and tomorrow's costs", "Cost control of the commercial fleet". The seminars are to be held as follows: Glasgow Nov 1; Nottingham Nov 4; Manchester Nov 10; Slough Nov 16; Newcastle upon Tyne Nov 18; Weston-super-Mare Nov 23; Leeds Dec 1; Copdock Dec 7; Birmingham Dec 14; London Dec 16.

A three-day residential course "Transport management for the 70s", covering transport control, road transport law, costing and budgeting, manpower and vehicle utilization and improving management performance, will be held from February 28 to March 2 1972. This course is aimed at the newly appointed transport manager or someone being prepared for promotion.

Five one-day seminars for local authorities, dealing particularly with plating and testing of vehicles, operators' licences, drivers' hours and records, maintenance and other legislation, are planned, and if the decision to join the Common Market has been taken a series of 10 one-day seminars covering the first half of 1972 will be held under the heading "Into Europe — preparing for the Common Market".
