reassess its distribution facilities, including the alternative of opening its own branches or entrusting their distribution to outside transport companies. It asked for comment as to how the problem should be approached before becoming involved in the actual detail.

This is obviously an extremely wide problem, common to a large number of organizations. It affects sales, distribution and transport premises, all of which are inter-related. Thus, to give only one example, it will be necessary to determine first, or alternatively reassess, just how high a standard of delivery service was required in any particular circumstance. Not only would this decision determine to some extent the delivery cost per unit, but also would affect the warehousing requirements.

As a general observation a considerable amount of deltic would have to be moved to justify the setting up of a chain of strategically located warehouses throughout the UK. It is for this reason that in recent years there has been a considerable development in the provision of chains of warehouses by professional hauliers for general haulage, merchandise and parcels traffic. But in many instances the crux of the overall decision to be made relevant to the various aspects of distribution is tied up with the sales policy of the company concerned and the competitiveness of the trade in which it is engaged.
