Banbury Company Return With 25 Vehicles: Woman Haulier Forms New • Conipany in Leicester

ABANBURY haulage company, Andy's Transport, Ltd., have returned to free enterprise with 25 vehicles purchased from British Road Services. The total unladen weight involved is 86 tons 18 cwt.

Andy's Transport, operating from their. prenationalization address at Hardwick Wharf, Southam Road, are to cover England, Scotland and Wales. They run a general daily service to London.

Hopes that they -may be successful with more tenders have been expressed by A. M. Walker, Ltd., a new company, of Leicester, who have already taken over 15 special A-licensed vehicles. Miss A. M. Walker, late managing director of Kinders Transport, Ltd., Blaby, is chairman of the new company.

The names of several other new purchasers, as well as those of many who have been successful with more than one tender, are revealed this week.

NORTHERN AREA

McPhee's (Newcastle), Ltd., Ford Street Garage, City Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, who have already bought six 14-tonners (The Commercial Motor, August 27), have been' successful with tenders for another seven vehicles. The latest purchase comprises a Maudslay and a Scammell. both I5-tonners, a Bedford 10-tonner, an Albion 8-tonner, a Dodge 7-tonner and two Bedford 6-tonners, Three units, at Sandyford, Dinsdale Road, Newcastle, and Stakeford, were involved.

Successful repeat purchasers in the north are Messrs. F. A. and S. Tuer, Morland, Penrith, who have acquired five vehicles (19 tons).

The Northern Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to the following: Mr. J. R. Hett, 48 Grange Road,. Darlington, for two vehicles (16 tons 13 cwt.); Mr. N. Smith, 23Carlyle Street, Willington Quay, Wallsend, one articulated outfit (4 tons 4 cwt.), based at Wanless Street, Wallsend; and Mr. A. Bell, Rockhurst, Highfield, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, one articulated outfit (4 tons 14 cwt.), based at Boat House Lane, Stockton.

Mr. N. Smith's latest purchase, a Bedford 10-ton outfit, will join an Austin, a Morris and a Seddon, all 6-tonners, taken

over in .May (The Commercial Motor, May 28), and now operated_by Smith and Van Hee, Ltd., 1-17 Wanless Street,

Wallsend-on-Tyne. General services to Birmingham and South Wales are being run.

A Bedford 10-ton outfit has also been acquired by Mr. Bell. It will be used to serve all areas. At the beginning a next month, Mr. Bell hopes to move to new premises in Ross Road, Portrack Lane, Stockton, where he will operate a clearing house and offer storage, loading and parking facilities.

NORTH-WEST A further repeat purchase, this time of one vehicle (31 tons), has been made by David Hall and Sons, Ltd., 577 Walshaw. Road, Bury, According to the current issue of Applications rand Decisions for the North ,' Western Traffic Area, the following assignments have been made: Norman Jowett, Ltd., Todmorden, have made over five vehicles (131 tons) to Pendle Haulage Co., Ltd., Sandy Lane Garage, Barrowford, near Nelson;. Mr. L. Gleave, Audlem, has had one vehicle (51 tons) assigned to him by Mr. J. Brindley, Sharnford, Hinckley, in the East Midland Area, and has made over a vehicle and a trailer (71 tons) to V. R. Espley, Ltd., Fourways Garage, Arclid, Sandbach, Cheshire; Messrs. Guy and Cowburn have assigned a vehicle and trailer (7} tons) to Messrs. S. and A. D. Cowburn (Cowburn Bros.), Bond House, Little Hook, near Preston; and Mr. E.• Jefferson, 18 Brocklehurst Street, Manchester, 9, has assigned one vehicle (2k tons) to Associated Motor Industries (Bolton), Ltd., Maple Street, Bolton.

Messrs. W. Gibson and Son, 156 Wirwick Road, Carlisle, have •made a second purchase, this time of four vehicles. Two of these, both Leylands, came from the Penrith depot of B.R.S., and the others, a Seddon and a Fordson, from a Newcastle depot. They will join a fleet of 21 vehicles, all of which are engaged in general haulage. A Foden 12-tonner has been taken over from the Church Road, Stockton-on-Tees depot of B.R.S., by Mr. T. R. Handley, The Yews, Crosby Garrett, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.

YORKSHIRE

Baldry's, Ltd., The Green, North Newbald, York, have purchased three more lorries. All are oil-engined 8-tonners, and are of Albion, Bedford and Seddon make. They were bought from Messrs. R. Hanson and Son, 2 King Street, Wakefield.

The capital of the company's transport subsidiary, Baldry's Haulage, Ltd., has been increased from £1,000 to £10,000. Baldry, Ltd., are farmers, growers and carrot and potato merchants. Repeat purchasers are Rothwells Transport Services, Ltd., Linthwaite Hall, Lintbwane, near Huddersfield (two vehicles), and Mr. H. Waters (H. Waters and Sons). 401 Greenland Road, Sheffield, 9 (one).

Mr. R. Nevis (Tockwith Transport Co.), Brewery Yard, Tockwith, York, who has been mentioned before, has had a vehicle assigned to him by Tockwith Engineers, Ltd., Tockwith.

New purchases reported by our Yorkshire correspondent have been made as follows: Hull and Glasgow Road Carriers, Ltd., 22 Market Place, Hull, two vehicles: T. Richardson (Batley), Ltd., Brookroyd Garage, Brookroyd Lane, Batley, two Pickering Road Haulage, Ltd., 82-86 Pickering Road, Hull, one; and Mr. W. H. Greenhough, 25 Sunbridge Road, Bradford, one articulated vehicle, based at 55-56 Mytongate, Hull.

WEST MIDLANDS

The West Midlands Licensing Authority has granted special.A licences to the following; Mr. G. Wood, 15 Windsor Street, Bilston, for three vehicles (181 tons); Wrekin Roadways, Ltd.. King Street, Wellington, two tractors (1(1 tons) and two trailers; and Mr. F. Weetman. 11 Park Terrace; Whittington Road, Oswestry, one vehicle (71 tons).

A further nine vehicles, (35[ tons) have been taken over by Longton Transport. Ltd., Church Street, Longton. who, as reported last week, already have 17 exB.R.S. vehicles. Eight Thornycrofts, with capacities ranging from 6 to 14 tons, and a Commer 5-tonner are concerned.

EAST MIDLANDS Andy's Transport, Ltd., Hardwick Wharf, Southam Road, Banbury, have returned to the field with 25 ex-B.R.S. vehicles (86 tons 18 cwt.). They comprise 13 Bedford 5-6-tonners, five Bedford 8-ton articulated vehicles, three Seddon 10-ton articulated vehicles, two Morris-Commercial 6-tortners and two Proctor 6-tonners. Trailers include semi low-loaders and a long trailer for' special. traffic. Operating from their pre,nationalization address, Andy's Transport are covering England, Scotland and Wales. They carry general traffic on a daily service to London.

Eleven vehicles (77 tons 18 cwt.), based at Cambridge Road, Cosby. have been purchased by A. M. Walker, Ltd., 9 The Crescent, King Street, Leicester. A. Tomlinson (Hauliers), Ltd. 291-3 Ilkeston Road. Nottingham, have bought four vehicles (13 tons 18 cwt.).

Fifteen special A-licensed vehicles, and one spare, have now been taken over by A. M. Walker, Ltd. The licensed vehicles comprise five A.E.C., three Atkinson, and two Thornycroft 14-tormers, an A.E.C. and an Atkinson 12-tormer, and an E.A.F., a Foden and a Mandalay, all 71-tonners.

They are engaged on general services to London and the south, Bristol, South Wales, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Hull and the eastern counties.

Successful. repeat purchasers are Mr. W. D. Barlow (Barlow and Hodgkinson). High Peak Harriers, Biggin, near Buxton, who have acquired three vehicles (9 tons 11 cwt.); Atlas Express Co.. Ltd., Slatefield Street, Glasgow, E.1, two (5i tons), based at la Gartree Street, Leicester.' and Harry Green (Removals), Ltd., 5 Swiss Terrace, London, N.W.6, one articulated outfit (4 tons 19 cwt.), based at 119a Nuns Street, Derby.

Mr. C. Bradshaw, White Gates, Sturtonby-Stow, has taken over a further five vehicles (161 tons) and assigned them to Messrs. C. and R. Bradshaw (J. Bradshaw. and Sons), at the same address. Ode of these (3 tons 17 cwt.) has been re-assigned to Mr. W. F. Cooper, Mill House, Dunham-on-Trent.

Special A licences have also been granted by the East Midland Licensing Authority to Mr. N. Mager, Lease Lane, East Halton-. near Grimsby, for one vehicle (31 tons). and Mr. H. Smith. Bank Cottage, Spital Hill, Retford, one (3 tons). k Nuneaton unit 4189, comprising two tippers (6 tons) has been purchased by Messrs. Woolrich Bros., 113 Folly Road, .Deanshanger, Wolverton, Bucks.

• EASTERN COUNTIES

Mr. F. N. Houchell and F. A. Houchell and Co., both of 10 Great Colman Street, Ipswich, have made a number of assignments of vehicles, the purchase of which has already been reported. Mr. Houchell has made over vehicles to the following: Mr. D. C. Geeter, Boxstead, Colchester (one articulated vehicle); Mr. A. Dent, Hillgay, Downham Market (a vehicle and a trailer); Mr. I-I. J. Calver, Wilby (one articulated vehicle); E. Hull, Ltd., 1 Old Ford End Road, Bedford (one articulated vehicle); Mr. J. L. Harrison, 61 Old Barratt Road, Woodbridge (one vehicle). F. A. Houchell and Co., have assigned one vehicle to each of the following : Messrs. J. W. Hall and Sons, Little Downham, Ely, and J. Amos, Belchamp St. Paul, Sudbury. A number of assignments has also been made by G. G. Barnard and Sons, Ltd., Stowmarket. They have sold four vehicles to Dowells 'Transport, Ltd., Rain ham, Essex. and one each to Messrs. G. W. Mr. G. T. Rickwood, 28 Market Place, Swaffharn, has made over two vehicles: to Mr. 6. S. Levitt, 85 Russell Street, Cambridge, and one to Messrs. R. Church and Son, Wootton, Bedford, An assignment has also been made by Mr. R. C. J. Paradinc, Gunsfield Garage,

St. Easton, Dunmow, of one vehicle to Mr. J. A. R. Norman, Littleport, Ely. B. and B.' (Lovimatoft), Ltd:, Lowestoft, have bought one vehicle from Mr, A. V. J. Bird, Pakefield, Lowestoft,

Knowles (Transport), Ltd., II Primrose Hill, Doddington, March, have purchased yet another vehicle, this time a 1949 Bedford 5-ton tipper. It will be used initially to supplement the company's fleet engaged in beet harvesting, which is at its peak at the present time.

The company have A, B and C-hiring, as well as special A licences'.

WESTERN AREA

A special A licence for two vehicles (5 tons 9 cwt.) has been issued by the Western Licensing Authority, to Messrs. A. H. Gore and G. H. West (A. H. Gore), Greyfield, Clutton, Som. The vehicles were assigned by Mr. T. R. Bracey.21 Nelson Road, Staple Hill, Bristol.

SOUTHERN AREA

Mr. H. J. Cutler, Sylvacherie, Stapehill Road, Hampreston Cross Roads, Wimborne, Dorset, who was reported last Week as having .purchased four vehicles, has now taken over from British Road Services a total of seven. Three are Bedford 7-tonners and four Bedford 6-tonners. It is intended to offer daily, services to London, as well as services to the Midlands, the north am' Scotland.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES C. Sew and Sons, Ltd., 12 Duke Street Hill, London, S.E.1, who were reported on October 1 as having been granted a special A licence for one vehicle, have now taken over .four, vehicles, which are expected to be ready to go. into service at the end of this month. Two Albions, an A.E.C. and a Seddon are concerned: They propose to operate a service 'between London and Portsmouth, • Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth, and Cardiff.
