The Mechanical Way

By J. D. McLintock

AMID an array of longstried. reputable products of tippinggear manufacturers, two somewhat revolutionary items of equipment stood out sharply at the Commercial Motor Show. These were both hydraulically operated tailboards,. with certain common factors, although there has never been any intentional interchange of idees between the two concerns on this matter.

The Anthony hydraulic tailboard loader—described in "The Commercial Motor" on August 27—was the c.mtre• of interested crowds at the stand. The manufacturer is Anthony Hoists, Ltd., Braintree Road, South Ruislip, Middlesex.

15 cwt. Lifted on Tailboard

Power to operate the standard Anthony gear pump, which works the magnesium-alloy tailboard, is obtained from a take-off, as usual. The cylinder ram is connected direct to the loader. When the loader reaches ground level. power is automatically cut off. The device deals with loads up to 15 cwt., and a safety valve acts as a safeguard against overloading.

The other hydraulic tailboard lift, the Telehoist, also for loads up to 15 cwt., was shown by W. W. Jenkins (Cheltenham), Ltd., 31, St. Pauls Street North. Cheltenham. Glos. It is operated by the standard combined pump and take-off, or, alternatively, by liaod pump. There are twin rams, one on each side of the rear of the body, and a linkage is arranged to maintain lateral location of the tailboard.

The advantages of hydraulic power for loading purposes speak for them-selves, but as is the case with tipping gear, hand operation is not to be scorned, and has wide Scope. There is

A32 thus considerable merit in the Burtonwood elevating tail lift, which handles loads up to 10 cwt. It has a selfsustaining hand winch and can be easily adapted to use on most 'vehicles.

The tailboard is fixed to runners on large ball races, and the guide columns are of pressed steel. Pulleyts arz lubricated by grease nipples.

This device was fully demonstrated "by numbers" at the Show, and it appeared to be simple in design and adequately strong. Unlike the two hydraulic tailboards, it can lift goods well above deck level. It costs £75 and the manufacturer is Burtonwood Engineering Co., Ltd., The Hyde. London, N.W,9, Tipping gear of the normal type has not undergone any sweeping change, but there are detail improvements of importance. Anthony Hoists, Ltd.. showed its latest gear in different forms on Thornycroft Sturdy and Fordson chassis.

Simplicity is a virtue of the ram cylinder and all oil passages are • in-built. The pump is direct-mounted, thus eliminating high-pressure oil pipes. All forces are absorbed by sub-frames. The slant-type hoist is guaranteed for loads up to 6 tons, and has 4, 45-55 degree tipping angle. Cost is from £80 to £100, according to type.

Bromilow and Edwards, Ltd., and Wood Hoists. Ltd., both of Foundry Street, Bolton, Lanes, shared a display which included front-rsm, slant, twin underbody and three-way tipping gears, as well as Principality moving floors.

Such diversity of equipment exists because it is wise to adapt tipping gear to its particular purpose. Front-ram end-tipping gear is applicable to shortwheelbase vehicles operating on level ground; twin underbody end-tipping gear is desirable for heavy types of vehicle; and three-way equipment for use in limited spaces. There is even a suitable g e a r. for long-wheelbase chassis, which are not usually recommended for tipping except, perhaps, light and bulky loads.

New B. and E. gears are the Bromwood (slant cylinder for shortwheelbase chassis up to 5 tons:price £80), the Stability Minor (end-tipping equipment for bodies up to 11 ft. long: price £94) and the Stability Major (end tipping for long-wheelbase vehicles up to 5 tons and 'body length up to 12 ft. 6 ins.; price £131 10s.) Tipping gears for refuse collectors are also available, and have a high reputatidn.

Long-wheelbase Tipper

In the range of Wood Hoist gears. the D64 end-discharge model is outstanding, as a unit for long-wheelbase chassis up to 5 tons. It costs £137 10s.

The Principality moving floor is made for most types of chassis and can be either hand or power operated. Its price is £1160.

Something astonishing among tippers., in the form of a 20-ton articulated easy-loading outfit, with ramps at the rear, appeared on the stand of Cranes (Dereharn), Ltd.. Dereham, Norfolk. The tipping gear employed is of Bromilow and Edwards manufacture, and the vehicle is for the Iraq Petroleum Co.. Ltd.

Strikingly finished in chrome yellow, a Morris-Commercial carried the Eagle single-ram tipping gear, on the stand of the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd, Warwick. A big feature of Eagle tipping equipment is that it works at low pressure, obviating leakage and increasing the life of the gear. Types available are for end tipping (twin underslung ram, 2-10 tons, and single front ram, 2-6 tons), three-way tipping (single underslung ram, 2-6 tons, and twin, 2-5 tons) and hand hydraulic tipping, This concern deals alSo in tipping trailers and semi-trailers.

"The pump is the heart of a tipping gear," says Edwards Bros. (Tippers), Ltd., Bedford Street, Bolton, and a feature of the company's product is she patent Edbro six-cylindered wobbleplate pump, 'which is combined with the power take-off, all moving parts being immersed in oil.

Pump and Take-off Unit Six vehicles with Edbro tipping gear were on view, these being of Albion, Austin, Commer, Maudslay, Thornycroft and Vulcan makes. The Edbro hand hydraulic gear was seen, as well as a specially sectioned pump, and a feature was made of the latest combined pump and take-off for Fordson. and Morris-Commercial vehicles. This concern markets all types of tipping gear, including those for heavy dumpers, and prices range from £35 (hand-operated) to £240 (the 12-ton power model).

Various types of assembly were shown by Pilot Works. Ltd., Manchester Road, Bolton. One model is particularly noteworthy as being a horizontal gear operating through strong fulcrum arms secured in steel bearings with rollers at their ends, to work on steel tracks. All models incorporate the Pilot patent rotary gear pump which is designed to give a smooth tip. Vertical gears are of single and twin-ram type. Prices range from £75 to 080.

Several tippers, including a refusecollection vehicle, were seen on the stand of Spenboro ugh Engineering Co., Ltd., Union Road, Heckmondwike, Yorks. A 5-cubic-yd. Dennis Pax with three-way tipping body had the singleram gear, and an attractive duo-blue Commer carried a deep-sided hody•with end-tipping equipment. The refuse collector was a Dodge, with 7-cubic-yd. body tipped by EP 46 telescopic gear. There were examples of the several types of hand gear which this concern markets, and a feature was made of the 2-6-ton underbody power gear, which is extensively supplied for agricultural trailers. The Spenborough concern is one of the manufacturers producing body stabilizers for use:on long-wheeHbase chassis.

Precision-built gears were shown by W. W. Jenkins (Cheltenham), Ltd., already mentioned 'in connection with a tailboard lift; Telehoist equipment is available to suit aost types of chassis. Its design is clean and it is light in weight. Control from the cab is one of its advantages.

A brightly coloured sectioned ram drew attention on the stand of Weston Works (Birmingham), Ltd., Weston Lane, Greet, Birmingham,. II. The twinram underbody gear was seen on a handsome Dodge with 6-cubic-yd. endtipping body. A crimson-finished Morris-Commercial showed the frontmounted,single-ram telescopic gear.

Hand Gear

Hand tipping gear—of great value to the operator who does not require to the it frequently, and to the farmer for his trailers—was seen in the exhibits of Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Waterloo Iron Works, Andover, Hants: John Perks and Son (Forgings), Lid., Crown Works,. Lye, Stourbridge (Crownall gear); and William E. Cary, Ltd., Red Batik, Manchester, 4.

Winches are a valuable part of the equipment for loading and unloading, and a complete range of lightweight types was shown by Thompson Bros. (Engineers), Ltd., Gilmore Works, Gilmore Road, London, S.E.I3. Features are machine-cut steel gears, a frame electrically welded throughout and phosphor-bronze bearings.
