• Ron Whittle, FCIT mlyr, has been elected president of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), the worldwide association of the road transport industry — passenger transport, professional and own-account haulage.

Whittle is, at 43, by far the youngest ever president of this Geneva-based organisation.

His term of office will be for two years from January 1, 1987.

He is a director of his family business, Go Whittle, a bus, coach and travel group with headquarters in Kidderminster. He has been active in the IRU for 13 years, a member of its executive committee for nine years and president of the passenger section during four terms of office.

Whittle has over 20 years' experience of trade associations and was elected a regional chairman in the Bus & Coach Council at the age of 24. he was BCC president for 1980-81 and is the longest serving council member. He was also a member of the Road Transport Industry Training Board (1970-76) and chairman of the Birmingham Region of the Institute of Traffic Administration in 1971.
