" I HOPE work will start this financial

year on the London—Birmingham motorway and Ross spur road. Both will be built to full motorway standards," said Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, when he opened the "Highway Needs of Britain" conference in London, sponsored by the Institute of Civil Engineers.

He added that the Birmingham— Preston motorway was planned to be started in 1959, and a special scheme for the Medway towns motorway would be drafted soon. The programme for England, Wales and Scotland would cost £280m. in four years, and this year highway expenditure, including spending by local authorities, would be well over £100m. for England and Wales alone.

Summaries of the papers presented at the conference appear on pages 545-547.

STATE SEIZES IDLE BUSES TWELVE buses and £3,000 worth of 1 equipment owned by the Pandora Motor Transport Co. have been requisitioned by the Ceylon Transport Board under the Motor Transport Act. This was the first vesting order under the new Act issued by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Maitripala Senenayake.

The order followed a statement by the company that the workshops and the buses were idle, and no repairs would be carried out. The Transport Board had already decided to take over all idle equipment owned by bus companies, in

readiness for nationalization on January 1.
