Firms running 3.5to 12-tonne CVs are being urged by TfL to make sure their vehicles are ready for the second phase of London's LEZ.

By Kevin Swallow TRANSPORT FOR LONDON (T1L) is advising road transport operators to make sure their vehicles comply with the latest phase of London's Low Emission Zone, which is due to start on 7 July, It applies to any business running a 3.5-tonne van and heavier inside Greater London. TfL is offering operators of noncompliant vehicles a "28-day warning period from the date they're first seen driving in the Zone, during which time they will not be issued with a penalty charge".

It's a "warning period that will be in place throughout the life of the scheme", Nick Fairholme. head of the London's LEZ, says: "We would urge operators of the remaining non-compliant vehicles to take action now if they wish to avoid having to pay the daily charge or incur penalty charges.

"The aim of the Low Emission Zone is to improve London's air quality so TfL would prefer operators of non-compliant vehicles to meet the emissions standards rather than pay a daily charge," he says.

Compliant vehicles are those registered as new on or after 1 October 2001 when Euro-3 was mandatory for new HGVs. Operators of vehicles that fail to meet the Euro-3 standard will be fined £200 a day. •
