NEW COMMERCIAL vehicle sales continued to rocket ahead in February, with home and foreign manufacturers pushing the first two months' sales up by over 5000, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

British manufacturers sold 37,758 vans and lorries in the first two months of 1980, against 35,431 in the same period last year; and foreign companies' share rose from 8,965 to 11,703. Total sales are up from 44,396 to 49,461.

The biggest jump by a home builder was at Ford, up from 10,579 to 17,360. Dodge, Hestair Dennis, ERF, and Foden all show increases, while sales by Bedford, Leyland, and Seddon Atkinson are down.

The Leyland Vehicles figure, down from 2127 to 2031, covers the last two months before Roadtrain's launch, and this month's figures should show a clearer pattern for the future. Top importer was Volkswagen, up from 1573 to 2889, followed by Magirus Deutz which rose from 971 to 1083. Volvo sales increased from 496 to 676, Scania is up from 237 to 248, MAN has increased from 77 to 111, and DAF rose from 332 to 384.
