Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Revolutions, whatever their type or their aims, have one thing in common—they cost a lot of money. The container boom is costing a fortune, And as is usual when a big deal is going through, the small fry are likely to go under.

As our industry mainly consists of small firms, companies which offer versatile and inexpensive container handling equipment have a wide and receptive market waiting to be tapped. Already this potential has been spotted by Precision Transport Equipment Ltd., of Fresh Wharf, Highbridge Road, Barking, Essex.

After carrying out worldwide investigations of container handling equipment, Mr. P. E. Henault, principal of the company, has tied up agreements under which he holds sole marketing rights in the UK and North America for the German-made Hunger Hydraulics. And, among the great range of hydraulic gear made by this company are two items of particular interest to small hauliers thinking of switching their activities to containers.

One, a hydraulic landing gear with a lifting capacity of 32 tons struck me as having a potential application to container trailers where it could quite successfully be used to park containers on stillages while they are unloaded, so freeing the vehicle for other duties. By mounting two sets of landing legs, one as normal and the second set behind the running gear. the semi-trailer could be lifted bodily through a total distance of some 25.5in., ample for the purpose.

The gear can be either manually powered or as an alternative the same mechanism can be driven by a 12 or 24V electric motor. Its mechanism comprises a swash-plate type, two-stage pump manually operated by a handle. When electrically powered the motor drives the same spindle, the handle being retained for emergency operation. A total lifting time with manual operation of 90sec is claimed—when powered the time is said to be only 10sec.

The second unit is specially designed for container handling but has countless applications. It comprises a set of four hydraulic legs, each of which is completely self contained. powered by integral electric motors taking their current from the vehicles' electrical system. With a lifting capacity of 8 tons for each unit, containers or other items weighing up to 32 tons can be handled.

The units will raise the load off a vehicle and lower it to the ground. They are controlled by a central wandering-lead type panel similar to those used on pedestrian-controlled overhead cranes and require the power of two 12V batteries of 130 Ah capacity,
