New Engineer for Bradford: Recommendation Rejected Bradford City Council has rejected a recommendation, reported in last week's issue, that the vacant post of city engineer and surveyor be offered to Mr. R. B. Donald, city engineer and architect to Belfast Corporation. The special sub-committee dealing with the appointment met on Tuesday, but the members could not agree as to any further recommendation to be made.

85 per cent. Grant for Welsh Bridge.

The Ministry of Transport has now intimated to Carmarthen County Council its willingness to pay 85 per cent. of the estimated cost of £83,295 for the construction of a new bridge at Carmarthen over the River Towy.

Kettering Haulage Rates.

Kettering Urban District Council has accepted the tender of Messrs. J. and A. Darby for the hire of motor vehicles and drivers, as follow :-25-30-cwt. vehicles, 18s. per day, and 35-40 cwt., 20s. per day.

Newport's Low Cleansing Costs.

The annual report of the Newport borough engineer (Mr. W. C. West), for the past year, remarks on the low cost of refuse collection and street sweeping at Newport, as compared with many other towns. The cost of the service was, according to a Ministry of Health return for 1933, lower than for any town of comparable size. In 1926-27 refuse collection and street sweeping at Newport cost £13,463, the number of houses in the area covered being 16,792. In 1938-34, the net cost had fallen to £7,944, after crediting a transport surplus of £1,101, and the number of houses served in December, 1933, was 18,065.
