SCOTS councillors have hit out at the movement of plutonium and other dangerous substances on secret routes through heavily-populated areas of central Scotland.
The matter was raised in Glasgow at a meeting between representatives of Strathclyde Regional Council and the 19 district councils in the west of Scotland.
Provost David Stark said there was a great potential danger in moving nuclear material by secret routes in unmarked vehicles.
These, he said, travel through Scotland's most heavily-populated areas on their way from Dounreay power station to Windscale and other nuclear establishements in England.
The substances should be taken off the roads and transported by sea, he said.
