XPERIMENTS with one-man single deck buses are to be made by Newcastle upon Tyne Corporation Transport. Two buses are on order and will be tried out on a semi-rural route from the town centre to Chapel House Estate, with limitedstop operation.

Rising fares were not keeping pace with costs, said a transport committee spokesman this week and there was a definite need to review the transport position so that peak efficiency could be maintained with maximum economy. This year the Newcastle undertaking was "in the red".

The two buses on order are Leyland Panther 36 ft. rear-engined chassis fitted with Walter Alexander bodies. They have front entrance and automatically controlled centre exit. Passenger capacity is 60 (45 seated and 15 standing).
