south-east Lancashire are to be examined by a special committee, which was appointed at a conference held in Manchester, on Tuesday.

The conference was attended by re, presentatives of the municipal-trans port undertakings at Ashton-under Lyne, Bolton, Bury, Leigh, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Stalvbridge and Wigan. Also present were representatives of the Lancashire United, North-Western and Ribble companies and the L.M.S. and L.N.E. Railway companies: Newspaper representatives were excluded from the conference, but it is understood that Mr. Ashton Davies opened the discussion, following a statement of the position by the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

The following resolution was passed :—" That this conference, having discussed the transport situation in south-east Lanes and east Cheshire, considers that there is a case for investigating the possibilities of further passenger-transport co-operation, including co-ordination with the railways, and appoints a committee to examine; the matter and report to the authorities and companies represented at this conference."

The companies mentioned will, it is stated, each have one representative on the committee, as will Ashton, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale. Salford Stockport and Stalybridge municipalities.

" It is understood," stated a Manchester newspaper, "that the railway companies intimated they would not consider electrification (of local suburban lines) until some scheme for coordination of passenger transport had been arranged. '
