• The Government has rejected proposals by some of the UK's biggest parcels operators which want to take on the Royal Mail in the national letter market.
Consumer Affairs Minister Eric Forth says: "Despite the fact that Mr Ridley (Trade and Industry Secretary) has met a number of companies interested in the sort of service provided by the Post Office, none has produced a proposition which interests him."
Forth says the Government will keep an "open mind" on future competition.
