Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Provision of Better Services Receiving Consideration by the Local Authorities.

_—...._ DETv'ELOPMENTS of motorbus "'facilities have been long desiredin connection with the two picturesque Derbyshire peak resorts known as the twin Matlocks. Apart from the normal flow of local traffic, the provision of means of better transport between Matlock and Matlock Bath has become an exigent problem, by reason of the in. creasing number of visitors coming to the district each year. In the past there has been some cause for suggesting that the traffic arrangements of the local authorities are not quite up to date. The cable tramway, which was presented to his native place by the late Sir George Newnes, has not proved the suceess its generous donor had desired, and is still run at a loss, the chief consolation to be derived from its operation being that it furnishes an admirable means of reaching an altitude for viewing the surrounding districts.

By carrying out a scheme for eStabHalting new motorbus services the urban council now hopes to accomplish improvements which have been too long delayed, whilst deriving therefrom revenue that may help to reduce the yearly deficit on the working of the cable route. There have been suggestions that, in the interest of the ratepayers, the cable

system should be abandoned entirely, but in view of the introduction of the suggested new bus services drastic action upon that score has not been precipitate-1.

At the last meeting of the urban district comitit, Mr. L. G. Wildgoose proposed that the inaguration of motorbus services between the two towns should be offered as a monopoly, his suggestion being that through services and penny stages should be rendered obligatory provisions in relation to sttch a plan. It was suggested that the scheme should come into operation in the week preceding Easter, that being the period when the first rush of visitors takes place. The council determined to approach six firms with regard to the matter, three local and one each from Derby, Chesterfield and Stockport, who are to be asked

to quote their fares, a proposal to grant a monopoly for the bus service for a cash payment being dropped, there being no seconder to the proposal.
