penalty notice (FPN) and graduated fixed penalties (GFP) for offences such as breaking drivers' hours increased as of last week. The move to make careless driving an offence punishable by FPN now sees middle-lane motorway hoggers liable for a £100 fine. Other examples of careless driving include: overtaking on the inside; driving too closely to another vehicle; and emerging from a side road into the path of another vehicle. Existing FPNs also rise with use of a mobile phone now attracting a £100 fine. Meanwhile, GFPs will nearly double in some cases.
