Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The application by Halifax Corporation and Amalgamated Passenger Transport {CM August 15). continued in Leeds last week and on Wednesday. It was granted an express service licence from Todmorden to the Palladium Bingo Hall in Elland but refused the Rastrick to Elland service. Hebble Motor Services Ltd. and Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co. Ltd. objected to the application. Another application, by Hebble, to run a series of excursions to Elland is to be heard by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners. This is objected to by Halifax.

The area manager for the Palladium Bingo Hall, Mr. A. Crabtree, finally disclosed the amount paid to Halifax for the contract service, at present being run to the hall, as £62 per week, although later, Mr. F. Murray, chief assistant of Halifax, said that only referred to two vehicles. He said the bingo club was unable to continue to pay this much but it was prepared to subsidize a bingo service.

Mr. P. Fingret, for Hebble, pointed out that the fares would bring in £118 6s a week. Mr. Crabtree admitted that he had only just worked out the figures and would have to scale them down.

Halifax called six passenger witnesses in support of the application.

Mr. T. A. Dunstan, manager of Hebble, said in his opinion even the latest figures for the proposed services were wrong because they should have been worked out by the Yorkshire Fares Committee. For the Todmorden service, he said, the costings were improper and for the Rastrick realistic. serv

the Todf Hebden Elland the Dunstan. Hebble was not concerned wit morden service on the other side Bridge but from Hebden Bridge to services were adequate, said Mr Passengers were being drawn away from the Yorkshire Woollen stage carriage by the Halifax contract service. Hebble was prepared to meet the management of the Palle ium Bingo Hall and a suitable arrangement could be made.

He said that there was plertt of spare capacity on his company's Burn ey /Halifax service and Yorkshire Woollen's Rastrick /Elland route. Hebble would want about £10 for the Todmorden service and £4 for Rastrick.

Summing up for the objectors, ri1r. Fingret said this.-was a flabby application ' as it had only been made so that the Bing management could charge for the service. In view of the objectors there was al eady an adequate stage carriage service.

Mr. M. Lawrence, for Halifax, said that despite the applicants' costing being questioned Halifax would make a profit. He asked the Commissioners to make a grant in the interest of the general public.
