EXCLUSIVE • A sharp-eyed Commercial Motor reader has had an unscheduled preview of Iveco's long-awaited flagship, the EuroStar, which is due to be launched next month.

Spotted north of Stuttgart, the stylish high-roof tractor, loaded on an Italian registered transporter, sports the "Flying Horse" badge and graphics of Iveco Group member Pegaso.

Iveco's new EuroTech tractor range is built at Iveco Group plants in Madrid, Spain and Ulm, Germany but the EuroStar will be sourced at a single site. The TurboStar premium tractor is assembled at Turin, but the new EuroStar is expected to be built at Ulm, alongside the EuroTech.

While the EuroTech has the MP multi-purpose cab with tripleslotted front grille and flared wheel arches, the EuroStar is taller and wider, measuring nearly 2.5m across from top to toe with a deeper, five-slot grille.

The most powerful UK-spec EuroTechs have 13.8-litre engines developing 350kW (469hp) . The EuroStar had its badge and model number covered, but it could well have the longrumoured uprated version of Iveco's mighty 17.2 lit m vee-eight boosted to 383kW (510hp). This would take it right to the top of the power league, alongside the Renault AE Magnum 520. The 828(142 big-vee in the 190.48 TurboStar develops up to 3.55kVY' (476hp) with a massive 2,050Nm (1,5121bft) of torque.

The arrival of the EuroStar will give Iveco a formidable heavy truck line-up: Over the past three years the entire range has been replaced apart from the big multiwheelers, and new versions of these are due to break cover by the end of the summer.
