A short time ago,. St. Helens Corporation applied suceesilully, 'for' consents for certain road's on the Southdene housin-g estate, near Kirkby, on the outskirts of Liverpool. These two applications mark the culmination of • a struggle for a new Southdene-St. Helens route, via Kirkby, Knowsley and Presccit. . This started when St. Helens applied for consent to operate in Knowsley .and Southdene. COACHES CUT RAIL DEMAND SAYS R.R. WITNESS .. ,

DEMAND.for the railway service from Rotherham to Yarmouth had ' dropped because of road competition, a " witness for British Railways told the Yorkshire Licensing Authority on Monday. W. Smart and Co., Ltd., and Messrs. Cecil Riley jointly applied to operate express carriages from Rawmarsli to Yarmouth, with picking. up points at Parkgate and Rotherham. The railways, Sheffield United Tours, Ltd., and Leon Motor Services, Ltd., objected.

Mr. Riley said that he had filed a similar application in 1953, but withdrew it when the railways said that they intended to run a through train to give Rotherham a better service. The train had never run, he said. The railway witness replied that a train was run on July 24 last year, leaving Rotherham at midnight. It carried only 80 passengers. Decision was reserved.
