NOTICE of appeal was given at Newcastle, last week, when Ronald Abbott, haulage contractor, of 246, Yarm Road, Darlington, was found guilty on two charges of having commercial petrol in the tank of two private cars. He was fined £40and ordered to pay £8 8s. costs in each case:

A labourer employed at Mr. Abbott's Skerningham quarry said in evidence that Mr. Abbott shouted to him to put the petrol in one of the cars. He must have misunderstood, because of noisy machinery which was working, and put the petrol in the tank of the car instead

of in the back seat. The petrol was

commercial spirit taken to the quarry to work the engines.

For the defence, Mr. T. H. Campbell WardlaW said: "At one time it was it fundamental principle of British justice that a person was innocent of any offence unless the charge was proved beyond any reasonable doubt by the prosecution.

"Unfortunately and regrettably, in this particular case, those who frame the laws of this country have departed from this principle, and in this case the otitis of proving innocence rests entirely upon the person charged."

At " A " division, the central station, there are nine different types of fire appliance, including the latest *escape machine. All the personnel are accommodated inside the vehicle which is built on a 100 b.h.p. Leyland chassis and equipped with a 50-ft. wheeled escape and a 30-ft. extending ladder.

A pump capable of delivering 700 g.p.m. at 120 lb. per sq. in. is part of the equipment, and a tank containing 60 gallons of water is fitted for immediate use on the site before the hydrant supply comes through. CO2, soda acid, foam and carbon tetrachloride fire-fighting apparatus is also carried, and a power take-off is employed for operating the hose reel.

The breakdown lorry, based on a Leyland Retriever chassis, is a twindrive six-wheeler•employing a doublereduction crawler gear which, in the lowest ratio, gives a 20 to 30-ton traction and propels the machine at walking speed on full throttle. A 10-ton crane is mounted on the

tender, mounted on a Leyland Cub export chassis, power take-off drives a 230-volt d.c. generator operating seal-alights of 2,000 candle-power. There are electric saws and oxyacetylene equipment for cutting away obstructions, a three-section 40-ft. ladder, and special tools of all types

for fighting very large conflagrations.

A mechanical breakdown lorry which is based on workshops in Bordesley has a Bedford Q.L, chassis and mounts a 3-ton crane and poweroperated winches. This unit is largely used for accidents and breakdowns involving station vehicles. Other major appliances include pumps of different types, an operational van (for odd jobs) and a hose layer. " In addition, at "A ' division, there are two small portable pumps and a canteen van.

Engine Overhauls

Many of the 88 ambulances had covered upwards of 200,000 miles when they were taken over, and these are due forreplacement as soon as new units become available. The fleet consists of Morris Commercial C.V. and PA, models, Commer Q2, Q3, Q4 and Q25, old 20 h.p. Austins and a number of the new Austin Welfarer ambulances. It is a policy of the service to increase the number of vehicles designed specifically for sitting cases, as these comprise seventenths of the total Major engine overhauls are carried out either at headquarters or at the Bordesley Green workshops, and, apart from machining, reconditioning jobs are completed on the
